The inevitable question…

WHY YOGA?

Indeed, why yoga??

There is the stretch and the strength in equal parts. The asana lengthen the body and tone the muscles.

There is the movement. It elevates the heart rate.

There is the breath. It replenishes the oxygen in the blood.

There is the whimsy. With names like “cow face pose” or the translation, Gomukasana, how can one NOT laugh.

There is the giddy fun. Stand on your head for a minute and try not to let the head rush effect you.

There is the devotion. It is an ancient practice you can feel through your being.

There is chanting and laughing and straining and ease. There is power and passion and grace. There is vulnerability, humility and praise.

There is…

this feeling of connection. This ineffable immovable irreplaceable tree. It grows roots into the ground and sprouts up through me. Only do I feel this earth sky connection so clear as when I am standing in mountain and flowing the the stream through vinyasa. Only then can I feel the drum song of the earth, the heartbeat of the mother. Her breath moves through me and I am expansive, the whole world sharing this moment in time. I have found the spirit in me.

That is why I do yoga.

Why do you do yoga? No right or wrong here.

This pose is all about courage! Double points for doing it in public!

How to:

1. place your hands on the mat in front of you and bend your elbows to 90 degrees

2. Snuggle you knees into your armpits and bring your toes together behind you

3. LOOK FORWARD

4. Begin to tip forward bringing the weight into the hands and letting the legs come onto the triceps

5. Play with lifting one toe and then the other (you can place a block under the forehead and bring the forehead down to the block if you are feeling skittish about face planting)

6. Once the feet have lifted begin to straighten the arms (I’m still working on this!)

Play. Have fun. And shake that Cowardly Lion off your back.  Share your crows in the comments!

I wanted to share this new site I found with all of you. It is called ChallengeLoop. Here you can sign up for challenges and win prizes! All you have to do is follow the challenge and post about your progress. If you have posted a certain number of times during the challenge you are entered into a drawing. There are all different sorts of challenges with all different types of prizes. #yogaeverydamnday – make it your New Year’s Resolution to practice daily for all of January. Practicing daily does not mean you have to take a full sweaty 90-minute class every single day (if you can make that happen, great!) but can be a 30 minute gentle stretch before bed or sun salutes in the morning… Whatever counts as a practice to you. As long as you make time to breathe and move (or not move – meditation is yoga too!) every day! This is not a challenge where you take a picture of yourself in a yoga pose once a day, but a real challenge of making a commitment to your body, soul and mind… more
